This clients' basement flooded due to bad grading. They contacted us to address this issue as well as to embellish their outdoor living space. Because the surrounding grade was about 2 feet higher than the threshold of their walkout basement door we excavated 2 feet down and a full 30 feet from the house to get the surrounding grade correct, requiring us to take out over 2,500 square feet of sod.
Once the grade was established we were able to create this beautiful custom landscape with 40 tons of accent boulders and several patio and deck areas to create various areas to enjoy the outdoors
A large water feature is the focal point of the lower flagstone patio which has several different entertaining areas as well as wall and boulders designed to act as additional conversation nooks. Underwater lights in the water feature reservoir cast a display of light on the natural stone. The upper deck hosts an outdoor kitchen, enclosed hot tub and fire pit area with windows for wind protection.
For a property such as this with elevation and slope problems, creating a usable outdoor living space with the application of natural stone walls, stairs, and patios is a great option! Stone is readily available in Colorado and a great material for landscapes. Flagstone slab stairs and a large bridge take observers over the dry creek bed, which also serves as a functioning drainage swale addressing the run off from the sod area.
We softened up the hardscapes with a plethora of colorful plantings including xeric plantings densely planted around all the hardscape and living areas. Plant pockets are areas of plantings inside the wall and patios, utilized if there is dead space on a patio or if the area just needs some color. On this project there is over 1,100 square feet of patio in one area so we integrated several plant pockets inside the patio area to bring a burst of color. It also allowed us to hid the existing caissons from the deck.
